Apocalypse-proof Tesla Cybertruck can do without charging stations

Apocalypse-proof Tesla Cybertruck can do without charging stations

Key findings

  • Archimedes Defense, in collaboration with UP.FIT from Unplugged Performance, now offers the world’s most robust Tesla Cybertrucks.
  • A package includes off-road body kits, Starlink connectivity and an AMP Drive G125TM motor-generator set for mobile charging.
  • Other packages offer different levels of armor and protection to suit different needs.

Military vehicle solutions provider Archimedes Defense, through its fleet division UP.FIT, has partnered with Unplugged Performance to develop the world’s most rugged Tesla Cybertruck. Unlike UP.FIT’s previous work on Cybertrucks for police use, the new product focuses on packages called Sting that outfit and prepare the electric pickup for use anywhere, even eliminating the need for a charging station.

One of the packages, the Sting Baja, comes with Unplugged Performance’s Invincible off-road body kits we saw last year. There’s also Starlink connectivity for off-grid adventures, while a “compact, lightweight, trunk-mounted” AMP Drive G125TM electric generator set has been added to charge the Cybertruck up to 125 kilowatts. The 800V direct-drive piston generator runs on Jet A, JP-8, diesel and biodiesel – it can even rescue other electric vehicles, with or without a NACS charging port.

Other Sting packages ready for the apocalypse

UP.FIT has also developed the Sting Protector package, which is also based on the Invincible off-road package. The Cybertruck may be bulletproof, but you can take that up a notch by adding bolt-on, removable external offset steel armor that can withstand 7.62mm assault rifle bullets – on par with BMW’s first armored electric sedan, the i7. The company said this is designed for private, corporate and government customers, while the generator can be purchased separately.

Then there is the Sting APC package, which takes the armour to the next level. It includes IED and mine protection, while the armour can now also protect occupants from 14.5mm machine gun bullets. Designed for high threat environments, presumably military use, it can also be ordered with a multi-fuel generator for long-range off-grid operations.

However, we have questions

We have several questions, however. UP.FIT has not disclosed pricing for Sting packages, but interested parties can pre-order them through Archimedes Defense for a $500 reservation fee. Production time was also not disclosed, but the company mentioned that the generator-equipped packages will be available next year. The weight penalty from the additional external armor is likely to be significant, but the company has not discussed the matter.

Whether the idea of bringing a separate generator to charge your electric truck is foolish depends on your reason for getting an EV. If it’s environmental concerns, you’re on the wrong track. But if you’re looking for the capabilities of the Cybertruck combined with unlimited range (as long as you have fuel for the generator) and reinforced protection, these Sting packages might be just what you need.
