Armed suspect shot by police at Long Beach subway station

LONG BEACH – An armed suspect is in police custody Thursday after he was shot by Long Beach Police Department officers at the A Line subway station in Long Beach.

Police were called to the corner of Pacific Avenue and Fifth Street around 9:10 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a man brandishing a firearm on the subway platform. When they arrived, officers found the suspect, who immediately left the platform and ran away, according to Sergeant Bradford Stein.

A chase began, during which the police shot at the suspect.

Long Beach Fire Department paramedics took the suspect to a hospital where he was treated for a gunshot wound to the upper body, Stein said.

“Due to police activity near the A Line (blue) Pacific Station in downtown Long Beach, a temporary bus bridge has been activated to allow Metro customers to access areas near the station or transfer to other modes of transportation until the station reopens,” said Metro spokesman Patrick Chandler. “Metro apologizes for any inconvenience this delay may have caused to our customers.”

According to Metro, trains departing from Long Beach station were delayed by 20 to 40 minutes.

Police said the suspect was medically evaluated and transported to the Long Beach Jail for booking, Stein said. No officers were injured and no other injuries were reported.

Officers seized a replica firearm at the crime scene.
