Art in Bayfront Park brings artists, artisans and music to Duluth

From August 17-18, Art in Bayfront Park and the Twin Ports Music Festival bring artists, artisans and music to Duluth. More than 150 vendors will offer jewelry, metalwork, pottery and even food.

Stephanie Hansen is the director of the Bayfront Park Art Culinary Market. She says they are always looking for newcomers. However, there is a panel of judges who choose from the applicants those who want to display their artwork. Hansen gave some tips on how people can qualify for next year.

“If you’re an artist and you’re wondering if you could make it to a festival like this, the answer is yes, you can,” Hansen said. “We’re always looking for new artists, both in the culinary market and in our art market. You look for diversity in your art, also uniqueness in your art. But we really love this festival because we can really bring a lot of people from all over the Midwest to Duluth to these beautiful shores of Bayfront Park.”

In addition to the art dealers and food trucks, the Twin Ports Music Festival even features live music from local bands. One of the new dealers this year is Amy Blake, the owner of Pippi Brewster. She says Art in Bayfront Park is a great way for people to connect with one another.

“So I started making art during COVID. I needed a hobby since I was home all the time, and I started going to art fairs last year,” Blake said. “I make one-of-a-kind handmade clay jewelry, so everything I make is only made once, so it makes it a little more fun.”

If other artists want to sell at future art fairs, Blake advises them to be persistent. While it takes a lot of time, patience and drive, Blake says with enough practice, artists can go far.

“Focus on your passion and just give it a go. It’s dangerous, but if you keep trying, it’s so much fun. It’s just nice to do something you’re passionate about,” Blake said. “Whether it’s just a passion project or what you do full-time, it’s a great opportunity to get your name out there.”
