Ashley Park has some styling tips for her “Emily in Paris” character Mindy

As Mindy Chen in the fan-favorite, escapist Netflix series Emily in ParisAshley Park plays a sassy-dressed American expat with an arsenal of one-liners and a song at heart. In real life, the 33-year-old actress is, well, a sassy-dressed California native with an arsenal of one-liners and a song at heart. There are many parallels between Park and the role she’s played for four years on the show, which has become a juggernaut for the streamer. In fact, it can sometimes be difficult to determine where Park ends and Mindy begins.

For example, in the Emily in Paris Universe, Mindy is dating Nicolas de Léon, the scion of the luxury group JVMA. In reality, Park is dating Paul Forman, the actor who plays Nicolas in EIP. Mindy and Ashley even share a closet and jewelry box, with Park often bringing some of her most treasured pieces to set to complement Mindy’s always outrageous looks. Luckily, as a Pandora brand ambassador, Park is never without the accessories, which Mindy is known to wear with even her most casual outfits. Below, Park talks about her history with the jewelry brand known for its customizable charm bracelets, as well as the Mindy looks fans should look out for Emily in Paris Season four.

What comes to mind when you think of Pandora?

I remember the first piece of jewelry I ever received as a gift. My dad gave my sister and I matching charm bracelets. Now I wear Pandora every day as my favorite dainty, stackable jewelry. It feels classy, but in a really affordable way.

You have a very strong sense of style. How would you describe it?

I’m a bit of a risk-taker for big moments, but my everyday style is comfortable-chic. I love versatile outfits that are comfortable all day but can be dressed up for the evening. At the moment, I’m into oversized, androgynous looks, so my boyfriend and I now share a suitcase when we travel.

And what about larger events, like red carpets?

Now when I choose a look for an event, I think, “How do I feel about this outfit?” If I feel confident and comfortable inside, it shows on the outside. So it all depends on what story or part of my self-image I want to show that day.

Is Mindy’s unique fashion sense similar to your personal style?

I’m definitely inspired by Mindy’s style and she’s definitely inspired by my style. Mindy marches to the beat of her own fashion drum and I tend to do that too. We’ve seen her style evolve over the seasons as she’s become more confident and self-assured, and that’s definitely reflected in my own fashion journey. When it comes to Mindy, every outfit is a work of art, so I work with the hair, makeup and costume teams to figure out how to breathe as much life and freshness into each look as possible. Oftentimes that’s done with jewelry. You’ll never see Mindy wearing just one earring—she likes to wear several. And in fact, she’s wearing a lot of my own Pandora pieces this season.

How much say do you have in Mindy’s wardrobe?

A lot. We all work on the look and we all love the character so much. (Emily in Paris’S Costume designer Marylin Fitoussi is a really good source of inspiration for me during fittings. We go through the racks of clothes and sometimes as soon as we pull out an outfit we think, “That’s so Mindy.” We may not know where to put it, but we know it has to go somewhere. The saddest thing, though, is when we get to the last episode and think, “We couldn’t wear that outfit!” because it never fit the right moment. That happens every season.

Do you have a favorite outfit from this season?

My opinion about a favorite outfit from the series usually changes when I’m not wearing it and can actually look at it (laughs). But a few stand out to me. One of them I’m wearing in the second drop of the season when we go to Rome. Mindy’s style has a storytelling aspect to it and we put a lot of thought into this dress and where it should fit in the season. It’s perfectly placed in terms of storytelling. We played a lot with structure and textures this season. There’s also this blue floral one-piece (Magda Butrym) that I’m wearing with a furry blue hat. We thought, “Oh my God, who would ever wear that?” And the answer was, “Sure, Mindy.”

Do you ever get to take things home from the set?

Not really. If I wear a latex outfit during the two days of shooting, I don’t need it in my closet anymore. But I do incorporate my own pieces into Mindy’s closet. There are a few special pieces that I either got from Lily (Collins) as a graduation gift or that my friend Paul Forman gave me that I will incorporate into the costumes.

What is the best fashion tip you have ever received?

I don’t know if this is real advice or if I just figured it out. But one important question I always ask myself is: Can I go to the bathroom in this? It’s just common sense. Whenever my friends ask, “Should I wear this?” I answer, “Will you be comfortable in this? And will you be able to go to the bathroom?”
