At least 1 dead in Miami-Dade – NBC 6 South Florida

At least one person was killed after a trailer caught fire at a trailer park in northwest Miami-Dade on Thursday evening, the Miami-Dade Fire Department confirmed.

The fire broke out around 10 p.m. in the Palm Lakes Mobile Home Park on Northwest 27th Avenue. Dozens of firefighters battled the flames.

According to the fire department, there may have been two victims. The deceased was in a wheelchair and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Authorities did not provide any further information about the condition of the other person.

According to witness Steven Carruyo, the victims were a couple and the deceased was a woman.

Carruyo said he knew both victims, and although he and others tried to get them out, it was too late.

“The fire broke out, many of my friends ran to the trailer, I tried to open it but I couldn’t,” he said. “My friend… said he couldn’t even open the gate or something… Then the fire department came and tried to rescue them, but by that time it was too late.”

Carruyo said “many people have suffered” because the victims were “good people, elderly people.”

The injured man was something of a father figure for Carruyo.

“I’ve known him since I was about 16 years old… He’s always given me advice and encouraged me,” he said. “He’s always helping the neighbors, the homeless on the streets and he’s a very outgoing person.”

Carruyo said he could only speculate about the cause of the fire.

“Maybe a lot of tools and a lot of stuff, extension cords plugged in… I kept telling him to turn some things off, but he’s a little stubborn. You know, he likes to use a lot of technology,” he said.

The authorities are investigating.

Back in June, residents of Palm Lakes gathered to protest the eviction of their homes.

Residents were told they had until July 22 to move out due to fire regulations, sewage issues and changes to the property.
