ATHENS, Texas (KETK) – The county seat of Henderson County is home to family activities, outdoor adventures and a thriving local economy. For the final stop of Small Town Live’s summer season, we visit the city of Athens.

Athens, or the “world capital of black-eyed peas”, is also known for hamburgers, violinists and leisure activities.

Jake Graf of the Cain Center YMCA said that it is the people who make Athens a great city and that through the center they are able to help residents.

“We also introduced afternoon and Friday care. This is a big deal since Athens has a four-day school week,” Graf said.

The YMCA said it is currently hiring a part-time swim coach and that anyone interested can apply at the center.

The Athens City Manager and Tourism Coordinator talk about the city’s heritage and culture.

“We have everything here in Athens,” said city manager Elizabeth Borstad.

Tourism Director Jennifer Browning described what visitors can expect from the Black Eyed Pea Jamboree in September and the Christmas Parade in December.

“We have the East Texas Arboretum, Lake Athens. There’s a motocross park here, there are a lot of different activities. Our rodeo is huge and we just love when all these groups come to town on the weekend,” Browning said.
