ATLANTIC CITY β An SUV driver who struck a gas meter and caused an evacuation of the residential area has been arrested.
Officers with the Atlantic City Police Department responded to a report of an ATV striking a gas meter on Morris Avenue shortly before 8 p.m. on Monday, August 26.
Due to the smell of natural gas, they immediately began evacuating the neighborhood as a precaution.
Police said Laron Wright, 31, of Atlantic City was driving the ATV.
According to police, he drove into an alley, attempted to turn, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a gas meter and another car.
The Atlantic City Fire Department and South Jersey Gas responded to the scene. After the all-clear was given two hours later, residents were allowed to return to their homes.
Wright was charged with negligently causing a risk of serious injury and damage and with disorderly conduct.
His ATV was confiscated and he was released on summons with a later court date.
