Bad decisions ruin rookie QB’s debut with the Broncos

Bad decisions ruin rookie QB’s debut with the Broncos

Statistics: 26 of 42 passes, 138 yards, 2 INTs and a rushing touchdown.

Mark: There were few good moments. But in the final seconds of the second quarter, Nix threw a 25-yard pass near the sideline to wide receiver Josh Reynolds. That was Nix’s best throw of the afternoon and set up a 45-yard field goal by kicker Wil Lutz. Nix showed what he was capable of in the fourth quarter when he ran to the right, did a pump fake and spun into the end zone to score a 4-yard touchdown with 2:09 minutes left in regulation.

Low light: The Broncos faced a third-and-9 attempt early in the second quarter when Nix attempted to force the ball to wide receiver Courtland Sutton in the end zone and was intercepted by Seattle safety Julian Love. It was a poor decision to throw the ball as Sutton was surrounded by two defenders. Nix nearly had his second interception when he threw the ball into the chest of Tyrel Dodson, but the Seahawks linebacker was unable to catch the ball.

Analysis: Nix looked scared. Even head coach Sean Payton’s conservative plays couldn’t calm him down. His technique was off. He was late on several throws. And he had nervous feet. In the second quarter, Nix seemed desperate to make a play and eventually put the ball in danger. He intercepted the ball and then tried to throw it to Sutton in double coverage, forcing the Broncos to settle for a field goal. There were also moments when Nix couldn’t decide whether to throw or keep the ball and run. And short passes to Jaleel McLaughlin didn’t yield many yards. The Broncos spent the offseason praising Nix’s college experience and maturity. On Sunday, he looked like a deer in the highlights.

Unknown hero

RB Kenneth Walker: Walker was unstoppable on Sunday. The Seahawks running back rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries and averaged 5.2 yards per attempt. He gave the Seahawks momentum in the third quarter, running 23 yards down the sideline and then jumping over the goal line for a touchdown. Walker had to leave the game in the fourth quarter because of abdominal pain.
