Baker Mayfield throws four touchdowns in Bucs’ 37-20 win

Baker Mayfield throws four touchdowns in Bucs’ 37-20 win

Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield signed a lucrative new contract in the offseason and provided a strong return on the team’s investment in Sunday’s game against the Commanders.

Mayfield completed 24 of 30 passes for 289 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Bucs to a 37-20 home victory. It is the fifth time Mayfield has thrown at least four touchdowns in a game and the second time he has done so with the Bucs.

Mayfield’s first and fourth touchdown passes were to Mike Evans, who led the league in touchdown catches last year and picked up right where he left off. Chris Godwin and freshman Jalen McMillan scored the other two touchdowns, while running back Rachaad White had 75 yards on six catches. White wasn’t quite as effective on the ground, but freshman Bucky Irving had nine carries for 62 yards in his debut.

The Bucs’ offensive success allowed them to take a 16-7 first-half lead, and Godwin’s scoring drive sent the Commanders into chaos. Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels’ first professional touchdown run provided a glimmer of hope, but Mayfield scored a 32-yard touchdown to McMillan, and the defense forced a punt that led to the Evans touchdown.

Daniels ran 16 times for 88 yards and scored another touchdown in overtime, but head coach Dan Quinn will surely hear questions about a number of big hits the runner-up made in the contest. The Commanders will also have to work on the missing connections with Terry McLaurin, as the rookie will play a home game against the Giants in week two.

Mayfield and the Bucs will head to Detroit to face the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last season. A win in week two wouldn’t carry the same weight, but would be another reason to believe the Bucs can make the playoffs again this year.
