Plants have a wide range of defense mechanisms that allow them to survive attacks from other life forms. Some of these defense mechanisms can be toxic to various animals, including humans. On the other hand, plants also serve as the basis for 70 to 80% of all useful medicines. This tour shows many examples of plants in Balboa Park that require caution.

Forever Balboa Park offers themed park tours the second Saturday of each month that focus on the park’s unique biodiversity and highlight the park’s horticultural wonders. The free tours are led by park volunteer and horticultural enthusiast Bill Edwards and begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Visitor Center unless otherwise noted. Walks last 1.5 to 2 hours and are typically less than a mile long and cover level terrain. Potential participants are encouraged to contact the Balboa Park Visitor Center prior to their scheduled walk to confirm any last-minute changes or cancellations to tours.
