Balfour Beatty selected for Albert J. Ellis Airport runway extension project

Balfour Beatty has been awarded a contract to advance the runway extension at Albert J. Ellis Airport in Jacksonville, North Carolina.

The project, commissioned by Onslow County, includes the renovation and expansion of the taxiway and runway.

This benefits travelers in Jacksonville, Wilmington, New Bern and the wider Eastern North Carolina region.

The company will serve as general contractor overseeing construction of a new 900-foot runway and a taxiway extension to accommodate larger aircraft.

The project also includes the installation of a new medium intensity approach lighting system with runway to improve pilot navigation during departures and landings.

In addition, Balfour Beatty was contracted to create a new access road to the airport and realign North Carolina Highway 111 to accommodate the construction of the extended runway.

Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2024.

Josh Taylor, project manager at Balfour Beatty in North Carolina, said: “Balfour Beatty will leverage its extensive experience in runway expansion to deliver these exciting new additions to Albert J. Ellis Airport.

“When completed, the revitalized airport will provide a convenient travel experience for passengers and motorists traveling to and from Onslow County.”

The latest development follows the installation of a 1,600 tonne bridge over the Birmingham to Derby railway line by Balfour Beatty Vinci in Saltley, Birmingham, UK.
