(What’s Cooking offers a twice-month roundup of what’s new in Beaver Valley’s food and drink scene.)

A new Mexican restaurant, Cantina Bar and Grill, has opened at 161 Brighton Ave. in Rochester.

Tacos, which cost $4 each or $10 for three, have been customers’ most popular menu choice since it opened last month.

“We also have breakfast burritos ($7), so you can come in starting at 8 a.m.,” said Chef Bree Hall. “We have our meat lovers, we have a vegetarian option. We can customize it to your liking. We have one with ham and egg, I know that’s very popular with a lot of the people who come in early in the morning from work and have a beer.”

“We’re also very family-oriented. So we have tacos,” Hall said. “You can have the basic meat and cheese kind. Or the chicken or steak kind; we try to please everyone. We have nachos, quesadillas. The burritos are also a big seller for us, usually the steak or chicken kind. Everything is fresh and made to order. We take orders and update our menu daily. We’re working on new specials.”

Authentic Mexican recipes come from the family of Chris Garcia, business partner of Cantina Bar and Grill. A Los Angeles native, he moved to Beaver County as a construction worker at the Shell Polymers Monaca plant. Garcia’s family ran a Mexican restaurant in California.

Homemade salsas/condiments include a spicy salsa and a thick salsa verde.

Garcia and his business partner Andy Naggy of Cantina Bar and Grill oversaw major renovations, including repainting ceilings and walls and freshening up the building from previous incarnations, including dives called Swan Dive and Gringos 20Twenty.

The Cantina Bar and Grill offers over 30 indoor seats, including tables and at the bar.

Sporting events such as the Steelers parties are broadcast on several 65-inch televisions.

The kitchen is open until 9 p.m. Opening hours are Monday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9.30 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 1.30 a.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1.30 a.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 9.30 p.m.

Happy Hour is weekdays from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

On Taco Tuesday, tacos are $1.

Margarita Mondays are being planned.

Smoking is prohibited in the Cantina Bar & Grill.
