Big changes at Walmart for seniors

Big changes at Walmart for seniors

Just months after the health centers closed, primary care centers are returning to Walmart.

CenterWell, the health services business of Humana Inc., will open primary care centers geared toward seniors in 23 Walmart Supercenter stores. The first openings will be in Florida, Georgia, Missouri and Texas in space formerly occupied by Walmart Health.

The opening of in-store centers is planned for the first half of 2025.

“CenterWell is committed to providing seniors with quality health care that is accessible, comprehensive and, most importantly, personalized,” said Sanjay Shetty, MD, president of CenterWell. “These nearly two dozen primary care centers are designed specifically for seniors, and the design of each location, including dedicated entrances and convenient parking, provides patients with the access they expect from our clinics across the country.”

The clinics employ state-certified physicians, trained nurses and medical assistants as well as nursing consultants, social workers, behavioral therapists and clinical pharmacists.

In addition to the in-store clinics, CenterWell will open senior-focused primary care centers adjacent to Walmart Supercenters in Tampa/St. Petersburg, Orlando, Jacksonville, Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth and Kansas City.

In May, Walmart announced it would close 51 medical centers in its stores, five years after they opened. Walmart Health and Walmart Health Virtual Care centers in five states closed, although the chain continued to operate nearly 4,600 pharmacies and 3,000 vision care centers.
