HERCULES, California. – Discount retail chain Big Lots is closing 75 stores across California, including some in the Bay Area.
In June, Big Lots reported a net loss of $205 million for the first quarter ended in May. Net sales fell 10 percent, totaling $1 billion in the first quarter, according to the company’s website.
President and CEO Bruce Thorn acknowledged that the company’s sales had suffered a setback.
“While we made significant progress in improving our operations in the first quarter, we missed our revenue targets largely due to a continued decline in consumer spending by our core customers, particularly on high-cost consumer goods,” he said.
