As the discounter struggles with a difficult consumer market, several Big Lots locations in New York will close this year, including the Canandaigua location and two in Western New York.

Three more stores – two on Long Island and one north of Albany – are scheduled to close in New York last month, according to the company’s website, bringing the total number of stores currently closing nationwide to 10.

In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission last month, Big Lots said it plans to close 35 to 40 stores and open three this year. The company reported 1,392 active stores at the beginning of 2024, compared to 1,425 in the first quarter of 2023.

“In 2024, the U.S. economy will continue to face macroeconomic challenges such as increased inflation, which will negatively impact the purchasing power of our customers,” Big Lots said in the filing.
