Bikers support Urbandale Food Pantry at annual event

URBANDALE, Iowa – The Urbandale Food Pantry hosted the 5th annual Pedal for the Pantry bike ride to raise awareness about the growing food insecurity in Iowa.

This year, the ride began and ended at 2201 George Flagg Parkway. Once started, participants could choose four different routes, each offering a special tour of the Des Moines community, including stops at bars and breweries that were also participating in the event.

The four routes were divided into different lengths and difficulty levels so that more people could participate and have fun. The routes went along the Racoon River Valley Trail, the Meredith Trail, around Gray’s Lake and the Great Western Trail.

After the ride, participants were invited to enjoy live music and refreshments at the Des Moines Beer Garden. A brunch was provided by the Central Iowa Shelter Services food truck Mulberry Farm and Food. For every ticket purchased, Central Iowa Services will donate a meal to the homeless.

The Urbandale Food Pantry serves central Iowa as a borderless food distribution center. The goal of the UFP is to connect with communities to provide food assistance to those in need. On average, the UFP serves 1,900 families per month and provides milk, meat, eggs, fruits and vegetables, personal care products, diapers, and formula.

Donations to Pedal for the Pantry can be made on the Urbandale Food Pantry website.
