Bills place WR Chase Claypool on IR and end his 2024 season

Bills place WR Chase Claypool on IR and end his 2024 season

The Buffalo Bills were hoping to start the 2024 season off right as the team enters a new season with a questionable wide receiver room. The Bills traded All-Pro Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans and let Gabe Davis leave as a free agent.

To make up for the loss of both productive wide receivers, the Bills brought in former Washington Commanders receiver Curtis Samuel, former Kansas City Chiefs receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and former Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins receiver Chase Claypool.

The hope was that Claypool could play a significant role in the offense, but that will no longer be the case. The team announced that Claypool has been placed on the injured list, ending his 2024 season.

Claypool suffered an injury on July 28 and has not yet been able to participate in the Bills’ practice. The 53-man roster can only include two players on the injured list who are scheduled to return, and that roster must be cut by August 27.

Claypool will likely receive compensation from the Bills for his injury, which could allow the veteran receiver to return to the Bills or sign with another team once he is fully healthy.

Although Claypool wasn’t projected to be a starting receiver, he could have been a valuable third rotation player. Instead, he needs to recover to potentially join another team.

Claypool was originally selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the No. 49 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Notre Dame. His rookie season was impressive, as Claypool rushed for 873 yards and nine touchdowns with two rushing touchdowns.

Claypool followed up with an equally impressive 2021 season, rushing for 860 yards and two touchdowns.

After the 2021 season, Claypool was traded to the Chicago Bears for a second-round pick. During the 2023 season, Claypool was accused of showing little effort in the Bears’ season opener.

Claypool then publicly stated that the Bears coaches had not given him the best possible conditions for success. His short season with the Bears ended with his transfer to the Miami Dolphins.

Claypool would finish with 77 yards and a touchdown in 2023. He joined the Bills, probably hoping to get his career back on track there, but he will have to wait until he is fully recovered to return.
