Birmingham Airport announces a major rule change every passenger should know

Birmingham Airport announces a major rule change every passenger should know

At Birmingham Airport, all passengers will have to contend with changes to the way they carry liquids, queuing and transit into the airport premises. The airport has confirmed that ongoing work on the new security hall will be completed by the June deadline.

The upgrade is crucial to ensure the system complies with regulations, meaning passengers will no longer have to remove liquids and laptops at pre-flight security checks. The airport told BirminghamLive that the new security system is already being rolled out.

A new feature of the security check will be a special X-ray scanner that will allow passengers to leave liquids and electronic devices in their hand luggage. The airport explained that the state-of-the-art security screening technology will be in place and that holidaymakers can expect it to be operational on time. However, it stressed that until the new system is operational, passengers must adhere to the 100ml baggage restriction.

When will the 100ml rule be abolished?

Birmingham will be lifting the 100ml liquid rule from 1 June, which will be just in time for the school holidays. Speaking about the next generation security project, CEO Nick Barton said: “Birmingham Airport has invested £60 million in a new security hall and new scanning equipment. From 1 June, our customers will start to feel the benefits of the new security systems we are introducing, which will result in a faster and easier pre-flight security screening process for our customers.

“In the meantime, our existing security restrictions will remain in place until June 1st. It is time to remind all customers that they must continue to remove electrical devices during searches and are only allowed to carry liquids, pastes and gels up to 100ml in resealable bags measuring 20 x 20cm in their hand luggage.”

“We can confirm that we will meet the deadline. We have already started introducing the new machines to customers. After April 4, we will have three machines available, which we are currently rolling out and testing.”

Can I take 100ml through security before June?

No, until June 1, passengers must follow the old security rules. This means they must remove belts and coats and remove all liquids from their carry-on baggage. Electronic devices must also be removed from their protective cases and placed in a separate compartment.

All liquids, pastes and gels must be no more than 100ml and must be packed in a resealable, clear plastic bag (20cm x 20cm). At Birmingham Airport, you can only go through security with a clear bag. Once the new rules come into force in June, passengers will be allowed to take up to two litres through security using the new scanners. We’ve asked airport management for more details on how this will work.
