Blake Corum was the biggest fantasy football flop of Week 1

Blake Corum was the biggest fantasy football flop of Week 1

The Los Angeles Rams exceeded expectations last season when they made the playoffs and gave the Detroit Lions a real fight in the NFC Wild Card Round. This offseason, the Rams actually had draft picks available (that weren’t traded away) and were able to sign some top talent to improve. On the second day of the NFL Draft, the Rams selected running back Blake Corum from Michigan.

Although on paper it looked like Corum wouldn’t be a good fit, there were comments from head coach Sean McVay that the freshman could jump up the rankings. McVay revealed that starter Kyren Williams would be their punt returner to start the season, and he was confident that Corum and Ronnie Rivers would “fill in for him if needed.”

The fantasy football community believed that Williams’ punt returns would give Corum an opportunity to get some snaps on offense. After all, Corum was one of the best running backs in college football and played a huge role in the Michigan Wolverines winning the CFP National Championship last season. As such, fantasy football players were profiling Corum as a potential late-round pick who could become a starter as the season progressed.

If Week 1 is any indication, fans will have to wait a little longer for Corum to make an impact on offense.

Corum did not play a single snap as a running back for the Rams during the Rams’ 20-26 overtime loss to the Lions in Week 1.

Williams dominated the snaps at the position, getting an incredible 71, according to Pro Football Focus. The only other running back to get snaps on offense is Rivers with seven.

The fact that Williams played 91 percent of the team’s offensive plays shows how much confidence McVay has in him as a running back. As for Williams’ play, he ran for 50 yards on eight carries and scored a touchdown, while catching three of his targets for four yards.

Rivers managed two runs of ten yards, his longest being nine yards.

That’s not to say Corum was completely inactive in the Rams’ season opener, though. Corum played exclusively on special teams for McVay, playing a total of nine snaps, according to ESPN’s Sarah Barshop.

There are 16 games left in the regular season, so there’s still time for Corum to potentially play running back, but for now, it looks like McVay will hit the ground running with Williams as the best running back on offense.
