It was an ugly afternoon for Notre-Dame in South Bend, when the Irish lost 14-16 to Northern Illinois. And transfer quarterback Riley Leonard didn’t look sharp.

On the day, Leonard completed 20 of 32 passes through the air for 163 yards and two interceptions, while scoring one touchdown on 11 carries for 16 net yards, continuing the trend of Leonard and Co. generally struggling in the air that was evident in Week 1.

And ESPN analyst Booger McFarland believes there is a discrepancy between Leonard and his offensive coordinator, Mike Denbrockthis needs to be solved.

“There seems to be a disconnect between new offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, who LSUand Riley Leonard,” said McFarland. “He’s trying to figure out what Riley does well. He knew what Jayden (Daniels) did well at LSU and won the Heisman championship. But right now there’s a disconnect. And every time Riley throws the football down the field, it gets intercepted. The passing game underneath is nonexistent. Denbrock needs to get Riley Leonard moving. He seems more comfortable moving, but they need to find a way to help the defense and make some more explosive plays.”
