Bookmakers expect Shohei Ohtani to become the first 50-50 player in MLB history.

With a few weeks left in the 2024 season, Ohtani is -350 at FanDuel Sportsbook and has 50 home runs and 50 steals, something no player has ever accomplished in a single season.

Heading into Wednesday’s game, Ohtani has 48 home runs and 48 swipes, leaving him 11 games left to hit two more of each and reach the milestone.

He is the sixth player to make it into the 40-40 club, joining Ronald Acuna Jr., who was 40-40 last year, as well as Alfonso Soriano, Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds and Jose Canseco.

Only recently, it was considered likely that Ohtani would reach the 50-50 mark.

In the first three months, only 16 of Ohtani’s bags were stolen, so 50 were out of the question.

Starting in July, he started running significantly more, stealing 12 balls that month and another 15 in August.

Entering the year, Ohtani had never stolen more than 26 bases in a season.

Reaching 50 home runs was also not a given throughout the season.

He hit 14 bombs in August, up from just six in July, and is well on his way to crossing the threshold.

His 48 home runs also represent a career high.

Ohtani’s skills at the plate and on the bases put him in pole position to secure his third career MVP title and first as the sole designated hitter.

The Dodger star’s odds at BetMGM Sportsbook are currently -10,000.

Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor (+1100) is the only other player in the National League with odds better than 100/1.
