Boston officials vote to demolish White Stadium in Franklin Park – Boston News, Weather, Sports

BOSTON (WHDH) – The Boston Parks Commission voted Monday night to demolish White Stadium in Franklin Park in Dorchester and replace it with a new state-of-the-art facility.

The motion was passed unanimously.

The City of Boston and Boston Public Schools plan to build a new sports center and stadium on the site that will serve as the home of a new professional women’s soccer team. The complex will also provide a state-of-the-art facility for Boston Public Schools students that people in the area say is desperately needed.

Once demolition plans are approved, the next step is to sign a new lease on the property before the stadium can be demolished.

Some are still worried about the cost of living after the renovation.

Franklin Park Defenders, a group opposing the project, released a statement on the decision, saying in part:

“There is no realistic transportation plan to get fans in and out of already overcrowded neighborhoods. If Massachusetts truly stands for environmental justice, we call on state authorities to review this deeply flawed plan and intervene before permanent harm is done to historic Franklin Park and our communities.”

The city plans to begin demolition in the fall.

Before construction of the new sports facility can begin, the Boston Parks Commission must approve all design plans.
