Boswell is Digest Player of the Week

Boswell is Digest Player of the Week

It’s rare for a kicker to be named Player of the Week, but “rare” means that he makes a difference, and that describes Chris Boswell’s performance in Sunday’s 18-10 win over the Falcons in Atlanta.

Boswell accounted for all of the Steelers’ points, converting 6 of 6 field goal attempts, with three of those conversions coming on kicks of 50 yards or more (57, 51, 56) on a day when the offense was without quarterback Russell Wilson and guard Isaac Seumalo. In addition to his field goals, Boswell also had to step in when punter Cameron Johnson suffered a knee injury on a fourth-quarter punt as the Steelers defended a 15-10 lead with 3:29 left. Because the play featured a penalty that required a re-kick, Boswell had to step in at a critical moment without a chance to punt into the net on the sideline or even catch a few long snaps from Christian Kuntz. Boswell converted a 43-yard punt and then Scotty Miller made a great play to tackle returner Avery Williams for no gain at the Falcons’ 40-yard line.

According to the FOX broadcast, Boswell, who has made 33 of 40 field goals from over 50 yards (82.5 percent) during his career, is the most accurate kicker from that distance in NFL history.

Also included was TJ Watt, who could have had a monster game had the refs not called a strip sack before Atlanta’s only touchdown and then another sack late in the third quarter. Watt finished with 4 tackles, 1 sack, 3 hits on the quarterback, 2 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery.

Other key contributors included CB Donta Jackson with 2 tackles, 1 interception and 2 passes defended; SS DeShon Elliott with 4 tackles, 1 interception and 2 passes defended; QB Justin Fields, who completed 17 of 23 (73.9 percent) for 156 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions and a 91.9 rating, in addition to 57 rushing yards on 14 carries (4.1 avg); and WR George Pickens, who caught 6 passes for 85 yards (14.2 avg), including receptions for 33 and 40 yards.
