Bournemouth 0-1 Chelsea: Christopher Nkunku scores late winner from Jadon Sancho pass after Cherries hit the woodwork twice and had a penalty saved | Football news

Christopher Nkunku came off the bench and, together with debutant Jadon Sancho, secured Chelsea’s 1-0 win at Bournemouth.

The home side saved an Evanilson penalty and Marcus Tavernier and Ryan Christie both hit the woodwork, but with just four minutes left in normal time, Chelsea’s substitutes combined to secure maximum points for the visitors.

The outstanding Sancho, who joined on loan from Manchester United on deadline day, marched in down the left flank and played it into the box to Nkunku, where the striker turned and slotted into the bottom corner for his first league goal of the season.

The late winner capped a dramatic night on the south coast, which also saw a record 14 yellow cards in the game. It was far from an aggressive contest, but both sides feel the other team should have gone down to 10, with Lewis Cook and Marc Cucurella almost picking up a second booking in the second half.

Ryan Christie hit the post as Bournemouth put Chelsea under pressure

Chelsea – who had goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to thank for saving a penalty in the first half after Wesley Fofana’s poor back pass led to the Spaniard bringing down Evanilson – have now won both of their away games this season and are seventh in the Premier League table.

Robert Sanchez made amends when Evanilson was denied a penalty in Chelsea’s clash with Bournemouth

Bournemouth are 11th, their unbeaten start to the season over. After a thrilling last-minute win at Everton before the international break, Andoni Iraola’s side will be wondering what might have happened if Tavernier’s rocket, Christie’s shot or Evanilson’s penalty had found the back of the net.

Redknapp: Move to Chelsea could be transformative for Sancho

Sky Sports’ Jamie Redknapp:

“Confidence is the key to football. When you are confident, you are a much better player.”

“When this transfer happened, I thought it was one of the strangest transfers I’ve seen in years. Chelsea are predominantly overloaded with wingers – Madueke, Nkunku, Neto, players who can play in wide areas. You think: how is he going to play in this Chelsea team?

“Chelsea believe it was a good decision financially to come to the club. He has come in and has obviously trained well, having replaced Pedro Neto at half-time unless there was an injury, and he has come in and made a good impression. There was a good chemistry with Cucurella, which sometimes happens naturally in training. And it looks like he is enjoying football.

“Let’s be honest: he was really bad at Manchester United. He went to Borussia Dortmund and did well in the Champions League. He’s done good things, he’s got his confidence back, his shoulders are back in shape and he’s enjoying football again.

“This could be a turning point for him and get his career back on track. He is too talented a player.”

“Time waits for no one in football. Before you know it, your career is over. You turn 25, 26 and think: ‘What do I do now? I haven’t set the standards I should have set.’

“Are you training right? Are you living right? Those are questions that have been asked of Jadon. What you can’t question is his ability and his skills. So I really hope it works out for him.”

About the team

  • Bournemouth made two changes: Mark Travers came on for the ineligible Kepa Arrizabalaga and Adam Smith replaced Julian Araujo.
  • Chelsea made two changes: Axel Disasi and Renato Veiga replaced the injured Malo Gusto and the ill Enzo Fernandez. Jadon Sancho was on the bench, Cole Palmer was fit and could start.

Maresca: You have to get your t-shirt dirty!

Chelsea Head Coach Enzo Maresca:

“That’s how you have to win games. We played two different games. In the first half we struggled. We didn’t win any tackles, we didn’t win any second balls. In the second half we were much better.”

“You can’t come to this stadium and think you can win the game without getting your shirt dirty. You have to win tackles, you have to fight. If we can keep that up for 95 minutes, we have a better chance of winning games.”

Iraola: Chelsea keeper Sanchez was the best player on the pitch

Bournemouth Head Coach Andoni Iraola:

“We played really well. We had a lot more chances than them. Their goalkeeper in particular made the difference. He was the best player on the pitch.”

“I will not talk about the referee. I have talked, but it does not work. I will try the opposite: not talk and see if something happens.”
