On Sunday evening, five carriages of the InterCity Claudiopolis from Cluj-Napoca in Romania derailed near the tracks to Keleti station in Budapest. Fortunately, no one was injured in the accident, according to an official statement from the Hungarian railway company MÁV.

Traffic at Keleti Station has come to a standstill

Due to the derailment, access to the tracks leading to Keleti Station is completely blocked, forcing the station to suspend all departures and arrivals for the rest of Sunday evening. Authorities have warned that the investigation and recovery operations could take a long time.

Reports from readers of telex suggest that passengers on stopped trains were not informed of the situation. Many began walking to the station. “After waiting for 10-15 minutes, passengers began to get off and walk along the tracks. We were not kept informed. After about 20 minutes, we too got off and left the area through the nearest exit, a gate in the soundproof fence. There was no panic, just impatient people,” wrote one reader.
