Bret Hart names the best two fights of his career – TJR Wrestling

There are two matches that Bret Hart would describe as the best of his legendary career.

When wrestling fans talk about the best wrestlers in the history of the business, the name of two-time WWE Hall of Famer Bret “Hitman” Hart often comes up. That’s because the “Excellence of Execution” has had many incredible matches in his 20-plus year career, the majority of which he spent with World Wrestling Entertainment.

Choosing his best matches is probably a difficult task, but Bret Hart narrowed it down while speaking to the Attitude Era podcast.

The legendary match between Bret Hart and Steve Austin at WrestleMania 13 (with Ken Shamrock as referee) is remembered by Bret because of the complexity of the match.

“Steve (Austin) was one of the best guys I ever worked with. He was a really good wrestler. Steve would have been a great wrestler even without the fight with me. I never want to say that he couldn’t have been who he was (without the fight with me). But I think the fight I had with him was the best fight he ever had. The best fight… the best fight I ever had.”

“If you ever look at a match and how it’s set up and watch all the little layers… This has the most layers. This is a match where you can’t predict what’s going to happen. You sit down and say, this is what they’re going to do. For example, if it was a match against Ric Flair, you could sit there and say, ‘Okay, he’s going to catch the beat…’ You can see the whole thing. But I mean, in this match, nobody knows what’s going to happen. And that’s what I love about it.”

Bret Hart loved the Ironman fight with Shawn Michaels

As a second choice, Bret Hart chose the WrestleMania 12 match he had against Shawn Michaels, in which the two Hall of Famers went 60 minutes without either of them going down. There was an overtime that gave Michaels the win a few minutes later and made him WWE Champion for the first time.

“WrestleMania 13 was my favorite match. Simply because it was so special. But the Iron Man Match comes very close. Those are the two best matches I’ve ever had. And despite the result of WrestleMania 12 and Shawn not being able to retain the title, that’s irrelevant.”

“The fight itself is just beautiful. It’s the hardest fight I’ve ever had. It’s the one where I had to work the hardest and think the most. Of all the fights in my career, those two fights stand out. I want to see someone else have a better Iron Man fight one day.”
