Brian Daboll of the New York Giants has to bench Daniel Jones to save himself

The tide is turning in East Rutherford, and the love affair with New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll appears to be over.

During an impressive 2022 season, the coach could do no wrong in his first year. Daboll was the city’s star and was cheered everywhere he went, from New York Rangers games to chance encounters on the street.

As coach, Daboll led the Giants to a win, a playoff appearance and their first postseason victory since Super Bowl XLVI, capping it all off with AP’s Coach of the Year award.

But it seems like an eternity ago.

Now, fast forward, fans are turning against Daboll. A disastrous 2023 season has left a bad taste in their mouths, and the optics only got worse in the offseason due to disputes with several coordinators and assistants.

The situation reached a climax on Sunday when the Giants suffered a loss to the Minnesota Vikings in the opener of the 2024 season – all while Daboll was in control of the game.

His personnel decisions were highly questionable, his plays were reminiscent of Joe Judge, and his inaction regarding quarterback Daniel Jones left fans wondering: Should Daboll really be on the hot seat?

That question seemed absurd a month ago, but now it seems legitimate. And if Daboll plans to stay in East Rutherford, he may have to cut off the money to his public enemy No. 1.

“No,” Daboll said after the game when asked if he was considering benching Jones. “We’ll monitor everything. (A quarterback change) is out of the question for me.”

The Giants and Jones are a sinking ship. There’s no getting around it right now, and while Daboll’s moves certainly haven’t helped in any way, he has no choice but to turn back the clock. If he doesn’t, he’ll likely be kicked out along with Jones at the end of the season – if the pair even make it that far.

Drew Lock isn’t the answer either, but the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. And right now, the Giants are acting insane.
