Bridge fire updates: Evacuation orders for Wrightwood and Mount Baldy; Mountain High Resort threatened

ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST, Calif. (KABC) — The fast-spreading Bridge Fire, which ravaged 47,904 acres in the Angeles National Forest, becoming the largest active wildfire in California, has burned nearly 40 structures, mostly homes, authorities said Wednesday.

The fire that started Sunday afternoon in San Gabriel Canyon flared up Tuesday evening, forcing residents in the Wrightwood and Mount Baldy areas to evacuate their homes. The fire is still 0% contained.

The Bridge Fire has expanded to 47,904 acres after flames destroyed several homes and threatened communities like Wrightwood.

During a press conference the next morning, officials said the fire destroyed 20 homes in Mt. Baldy and another 13 in the Wrightwood area. Six cabins were also destroyed.

About 2,500 buildings are still threatened by the flames, and comprehensive evacuation orders and warnings remain in effect.

No serious injuries or deaths were reported as a result of the bridge fire, but Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said three people were trapped in a remote area five miles west of Mount Baldy.

One of those men was identified as an off-duty sergeant with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Luna said they had to be flown out of the area, but that couldn’t happen until the smoke cleared. They were safe for now, they said.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Although the severe heat wave that exacerbated fire conditions across Southern California has subsided, authorities said they were continuing to monitor the spread of the flames.

There is a possibility that the winds will turn west again, which could cause problems at higher elevations.

As for the residents who were evacuated overnight, one of the evacuees told Eyewitness News he had never experienced anything like it.

“I’ve never seen anything like this. There’s a chance we could lose everything there,” said John Haskell of Wrightwood. “But our family is safe. Hopefully everyone gets out and no one gets hurt… I’ve seen a lot of these. Nothing like this has ever happened before.”

After the bridge fire exploded in size on Tuesday and spread from Los Angeles County to San Bernardino County, authorities declared a state of emergency.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department issued a mandatory evacuation order for the East Fork communities of Camp Williams and River Community. As the southeastern portion of the Bridge Fire continues to burn, an evacuation warning was issued for northern Claremont Tuesday evening as a precaution, the City of Claremont said.

“We are urging anyone under evacuation orders to leave the area immediately,” said Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone.

Forest visitors would be evacuated from the area, the Angeles National Forest said on social media.

“The safety of our community members is our top priority and we will continue to assist residents in any way we can. We urge all residents of the affected areas who have been ordered to evacuate to follow those orders. If we ask you to evacuate, there is no property worth risking your life for,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna.

Below is a list of closures:

  • State Route 138 from Lone Pine to Beekley Road
  • State Route 2 closed from Big Pine to SR-138
  • San Gabriel Canyon and East Fork of the San Gabriel River
  • Mt. Baldy Road at the intersection of Shinn Road

Air quality in the San Gabriel Valley and Inland Empire has been rated “unhealthy” due to the Bridge Fire and nearby Line Fire, with residents urged to stay indoors or wear a mask when outdoors.

Strong winds and low humidity are helping the fire spread, Cal Fire said. Firefighters also hope that the upcoming cooler weather will slow the fire enough to give them the upper hand.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
