Brook Park thanks volunteers after devastating tornado

BROOK PARK, Ohio — Brook Park City Council fired up the grill and fed about a dozen volunteers from Team Rubicon and the Southern Baptist Convention Disaster Relief to say “thank you” for all the help they have provided to residents across the city since dangerous storms moved in and Brook Park was also hit by a tornado earlier this month.

“Some of our residents don’t have the ability to go out into their backyards and cut down some of these large trees that were brought down by the tornadoes,” said Brook Park Mayor Edward Orcutt. “And what we’re doing is we’re using these volunteer groups to go out into residents’ backyards and take care of these trees.”

Jon Chapman of Team Rubicon says this volunteer work takes him across the country to help people in disaster areas. He says it’s a “calling.”

“It’s just one of those things that shows you that there is still good in the world and that there are people who want to help other people,” Chapman said.

In addition to the burgers and hot dogs, the Brook Park Foundation also recognized the efforts of the two groups to rebuild the community after the tornado.

The Booster Club donated $1,000 to both groups.

“So we’ve been in the neighborhood and seen what great work they’re doing,” Tim Chornak said. “That’s why we’re here to present these organizations with a check for the great work they do.”
