Bryant’s golf dynasty is crowned by 7th place at the 1988 National Championships

Under the leadership of Northeast-10 Hall of Fame coach Archie Boulet, the Bryant University men’s golf program was one of the best teams in a region and one of the best nationally for nearly 50 years. The program won 20 NE10 titles, including 16 in 18 years in the 1980s and 1990s. Bryant also competed in 31 NCAA championships and won 11 New England titles from 1981 to 2007.

There was probably no better stretch, however, than the one from 1988 to 1991. The four-year streak capped a streak of nine consecutive NE10 championships for the then-Indians. Bryant made it to the NCAA championship each of the four years, finishing seventh in both 1988 and 1991. Those two finishes are the best in program history and the best for any NE10 golf program.

The 1988 team will go down as one of the best in program history and included three All-Americans in Chris McCarthy, Dave French and Bob Brown. The team won the NE10 championship by 11 strokes over Bentley before finishing seventh at the NCAA Championships. Brown led the field for three rounds at the NCAA Championships in the spring before ultimately finishing eighth and earning All-America honors. The team shot an impressive 1,235 strokes, just one stroke out of sixth place and three strokes out of a top-five finish.

Bryant finished 13th in 1989, 9th in 1990 and tied for 7th in 1991, finishing just three strokes out of 5th. This stretch also produced three NE-10 Players of the Year honors: French (’88), Scott Trethaway (’90) and Paul Grondahl (’91). French was ultimately inducted into the NE10 Hall of Fame in 2007 after earning All-America honors three times in his career and NE10 Player of the Year honors.
