Bullpen collapse leads to unfortunate defeat

Bullpen collapse leads to unfortunate defeat

The Mets had the edge on paper, but everything went wrong in their 4-6 loss to the Phillies. The offense took an early lead but also wasted several opportunities to score runs. With the bases loaded in the first inning, they scored just one run after pitcher Kolby Allard brought in a run with a walk. After driving in two runs with a triple in the third inning, Starling Marte was left on base with one out.

Those runs proved decisive in the end, as Luis Severino allowed two home runs to Bryce Harper to put the Phillies back in the game. Severino pitched well, but two errors ended up costing them dearly. He was sent off after allowing three runs in six innings. He managed one walk and struck out five strikeouts. Trea Turner’s walk before Harper’s second home run sealed the deal for him and the team.

Asking this bullpen to hold a one-run lead against the Phillies was a tall order to begin with, but they wasted no time in erasing the lead. Danny Young let the first two batters get past him to get to the plate, and the only out he managed was a sacrifice bunt by Brandon Marsh. Reed Garrett followed and managed a huge strikeout of Weston Wilson, but unfortunately, Cal Stevenson was just about to turn into the Ender Inciarte of 2016. He brought both runners home with a double to left, giving the Phillies their first lead of the game in the seventh inning.

Just like Inciarte, Stevenson wasn’t done yet. In the next inning, JD Martinez hit a ball to center that he beat for a home run to tie the game. Just for fun, the Phillies got an extra run in the eighth inning against Ryne Stanek to make the disaster even worse for the Mets. Francisco Lindor was apparently completely unavailable, Starling Marte was hit in the arm by a pitch, and the team suffered a terrible loss when it should have been a win. The offense sputtered, although Allard struggled, and then Taijuan Walker came in behind him, who wasn’t having a great season.

A day after everything went right for the Mets, a lot of things went wrong in a game that will be crucial to their postseason aspirations. At least Luisangel Acuña got his first major league hit. Congratulations to him and let’s hope this team makes it to the finale of the series.
