Buy the best ski equipment according to an expert

Whether you’re a beginner skier or a seasoned veteran, there’s an abundance of ski equipment available to buy these days, which can be overwhelming.

Good Morning America spoke with Ariana Ferwerda, co-founder and CEO of Halfdays, to find out her best tips and tricks for anyone looking to purchase new gear or upgrade their existing gear.

“We’re trying to get more women into the mountains and encourage people to just get out there,” Ferwerda said. “We want our products to be technical and warm, but also look great.”

“I highly recommend buying waterproof material when you buy your ski outerwear,” she added. “In your product description, make sure it has a waterproof rating of between 10,000mm and 20,000mm.”

She also advised that your baseline should ideally be 15,000mm or more.

Below, Ferwerda gave us a step-by-step guide to how she layers like a pro when getting ready for the mountain, and some pro tips for skiers who already have their gear on.

Base layer

“When skiing, you always want to have a comfortable base layer,” Ferwerda said.

She also said that when buying, you should consider where you’re skiing to know how much warmth you need. She said if you’re going to be in frigid temperatures in the Northeast, a merino wool blend base layer is a must. If you’re skiing on a warm, sunny day in Colorado, a synthetic material is perfectly adequate.

Ferwerda also points out that you should make sure the bottom of the leggings you buy sits flat against your leg to avoid irritation under your boots.

Accesories

“Accessories are more important than you think and I often see clients overlook them until they are on the mountain and then desperately rush to buy a neck warmer or hand warmer to save the day!”

When buying ski socks, Ferwerda recommends looking for sweat-wicking material such as a merino wool blend.

Pro tip: Bring a small, waterproof bag to hold essentials. Think lip balm, moisturizer with SPF and hand warmers. “I love the Ace Fanny Pack by Dagne Dover. It’s the perfect size and made of neoprene.”

Outerwear

For beginners:

“If you’re investing in skiwear for the first time, I recommend an insulated ski jacket and ski pants. Go for something more classic so you can wear it for years to come. Insulated outerwear is versatile and great for everyday skiing at the resort.”

For someone who already skis:

“If you already have a classic ski set and want to upgrade your skiing style, choose a jacket in a bright color or a pair of more form-fitting ski pants. This way you can mix and match and create new looks for your next ski trips.”
