BYD will use Huawei’s ADAS for ‘hardcore’ electric vehicles and take on Tesla

BYD, China’s leading electric car maker, will use Huawei’s advanced driver assistance technology for its new “hardcore” electric SUV brand. The new partnership comes as BYD seeks to close the technology gap with Tesla and other emerging Chinese rivals.

BYD will use Huawei’s new technology in its off-road electric vehicles

BYD’s new “professional brand” Fang Cheng Bao received a major upgrade on Tuesday after securing a partnership with Apple rival Huawei.

The brand will use Huawei’s new Qiankun Intelligent Driving ADS 3.0 to usher in “a new era of global hardcore intelligent driving.” BYD’s Fang Cheng Bao will work with the tech giant to research and develop intelligent driving technology for its off-road vehicles.

BYD launched Fang Cheng Bao last June. To celebrate its first anniversary, the brand has launched a “renewal strategy” and claims it has now fully entered the 2.0 development phase.

After expanding its product range, BYD’s new personalized brand is evolving from “professional class” to “public personality” as it opens up its market.

BYD and Huawei have developed the Fang Cheng Bao intelligent driving solution, which both companies will use.

The aim of the partnership is to advance smart diving for “hardcore cars” and further develop China’s intelligent driving technology.

The first model to feature the new technology will be the Fang Cheng Bao 8, BYD’s hybrid off-road SUV, but the features will be rolled out across the entire sub-brand.

Fang Cheng Bao’s first vehicle, the Bao 5, was launched last November. The Bao 8 was unveiled in April, along with concepts of the Super 3 (Bao 3) electric SUV and the Super 9 supercar. The Bao 8 off-road SUV is expected to be priced at around USD 70,200 (RMB 500,000).

Closing the ADAS technology gap with Tesla

Huawei launched Qiankun ADS 3.0 in April, unlocking new intelligent driving features such as Navigate on Autopilot (NOA) in the city, similar to Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD).

The system uses the first end-to-end network architecture, which provides a more human experience. It is also more secure and efficient.

The tech giant said its ADS 3.0 is the first system to achieve full “parking lot-to-parking” connectivity, and vehicles can also autonomously detect complex locations such as gates, roundabouts and tight U-turns to enable true “one-click” arrivals.

Parking assistance features allow owners to select a parking space via the infotainment system, exit the car, and have it park automatically remotely.

If the vehicle blocks other cars, it can be remotely controlled via “Call to go” on the smartphone.

The new BYD Fang Cheng Bao 8, equipped with Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 3.0, is officially in the testing phase. BYD hopes that the new off-road SUV can be launched as soon as possible to provide new experiences with Huawei’s “Smart Hardcore” technology.

BYD and Huawei are working to develop the world’s first intelligent driving technology exclusively for hardcore off-road vehicles.

The new partnership comes at a time when BYD is investing heavily in new ADAS technology to keep pace with Tesla and other Chinese competitors such as NIO and XPeng.

BYD dominates China, the world’s largest electric car market, but buyers are increasingly looking for newer, more advanced features. BYD hopes working with Huawei can speed up internal development.

To close the technology gap, the electric vehicle maker recently launched a series of updated 2025 models with additional LiDAR, including its Tesla Model 3-like Seal EV.
