Byron Allen hires new CFO for Weather Channel

Byron Allen’s media company has hired a new chief financial officer to lead operations of its best-known TV brand, The Weather Channel.

Christopher T. Young, who held leadership positions at Latino-focused media company Entravision for more than 15 years, has been hired as CFO of The Weather Channel and will become executive vice president at Allen Media Group, the company announced Wednesday.

Young, who also ran outdoor advertising company Vista Media and held positions at several banking institutions, will be based in Los Angeles and Atlanta, where the Weather Channel campus operates. He will report to Allen and Allen CFO Christopher Malone.

Allen bought the linear TV network The Weather Channel in 2018 for a reported $300 million. (The brand’s digital assets were sold by IBM to private equity investment firm Francisco Partners last year.)

Allen Media Group’s holdings also include the website TheGrio, local television stations in several cities, the streaming service HBCU Go and brands such as Cars.TV and Pets.TV. The company went through a notable round of layoffs and cost-cutting in May, resulting in cuts across all business units as part of a restructuring.

“We are delighted that Christopher Young is joining Allen Media Group,” said Byron Allen in a statement. “Chris brings extensive financial and operational experience from over three decades in the media industry. His extensive expertise and long-standing capital markets background are valuable assets.”

Young added, “I look forward to working with the Allen Media Group team to execute on our continued growth and long-term strategies.”
