Calcasieu swimming pools test positive for West Nile virus

LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana (KPLC) – Parish officials are urging residents to use mosquito repellent after evidence of West Nile virus was discovered in Calcasieu Parish.

The Calcasieu Parish Mosquito Control Agency announced Friday that 20 parish pools, or clusters of mosquitoes from different areas of the parish, have tested positive for the West Nile virus. In addition, one person in the parish has been infected with the virus, the statement said.

“We continue to spray to reduce the mosquito population in our community,” said Scott Harrington, Calcasieu Parish Mosquito Control Director. “However, we cannot completely eliminate the threat of mosquito-borne diseases. Please remember to take every precaution during periods of high mosquito activity.”

The area where the positive test was found was sprayed just last night and will be sprayed again on Monday and Tuesday.

West Nile virus is transmitted by mosquitoes and can cause inflammation of the brain, according to Harrington. Most people infected with the virus do not feel sick, but about one in five infected people develop fever and flu-like symptoms. About 1 in 150 infected people develop severe and sometimes fatal illness.

Residents are reminded to always use mosquito repellent and, if possible, wear long sleeves and pants when going outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk. In addition, mosquitoes usually lay their eggs in water, so dispose of or empty any water-containing items outside your home.
