Canada finishes Copa America debut with fourth place

CHARLOTTE, NC – Canada and Uruguay drew 2-2 in their CONMEBOL Copa America 2024 third-place match at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina on Saturday, with the South Americans winning 4-3 on penalties.

Rodrigo Bentancur opened the scoring in the 8th minute, putting Uruguay ahead with a left-footed shot into the box following a corner.

Goalkeeper of Canada Dayne St. Clairwho made his Copa America debut, blocked a shot on goal by Maximiliano Araujo in the 18th minute.

Tani Oluwaseyi With a cross almost at the right post Jakob Schäffelburg in the 21st minute, but was saved by Sebastian Caceres.

Ismael Kone equalized in the 22nd minute when he deflected the ball backwards with his right foot in the penalty area following the resulting corner kick.

Ali Ahmed found Oluwaseyi in the penalty area in the 41st minute, but his header went wide.

Jonathan Osorio had a shot in the 43rd minute that was blocked by Uruguayan goalkeeper Sergio Rochet. Osorio headed the rebound towards goal, but Nahitan Nandez cleared his effort off the goal line.

Oluwaseyi was blocked by Rochet in the 60th minute and the game remained even in the second half.

Derek Cornelius made an important block in the penalty area to stop Brian Rodriguez in the 70th minute.

Alphonso Davis shot from outside the penalty area in the 71st minute, but missed the right post by just centimeters.

JonathanDavid scored in the box in the 80th minute to give the Concacaf nation the lead. Kone took a long-range shot and found the rebound, which was blocked by Rochet.

Luis Suarez scored in the penalty area in the 90+2 minute to level the game late and force a penalty shootout.

In the penalty shootout, Canada started with Jonathan David scoring the first goal, followed by Valverde equalizing for Uruguay. Bombito kept the Canadians ahead, Bentancur increased the score to 2-2 and Ismael Koné’s penalty was saved by goalkeeper Sergio Rochet. Giorgian de Arrascaeta increased the score to 3-2 for the South Americans, Mathieu Choiniere kept the Canadians in the fight, Luis Suárez increased the score to 4-3 and Alphonso Davies hit the crossbar to seal Uruguay’s victory.
