Canary Wharf tube station evacuated as police shout: “Get out as fast as you can!”

Canary Wharf tube station in London was the scene of a dramatic evacuation following a major emergency operation directly outside the tube station.

Dozens of commuters fled for the exits as a police officer urged everyone to “get out as quickly as possible.” At least eight ambulances and police vehicles swarmed the scene. TFL staff and Canary Wharf security guards quickly activated the emergency lockdowns and sealed off the main entrances to the station, The Mirror reports.

A person, identified only as a man wearing a face covering, was subsequently seen being transported on a stretcher to an ambulance, accompanied by ECG machines and ice packs. There is unconfirmed evidence that the man may have “fallen from a great height”.

British Transport Police have temporarily closed the tube station, while TfL confirmed disruption on the Jubilee Line due to a “customer incident”. A tweet from TfL Access said: “Partially closed – Jubilee Line. Trains on the westbound Jubilee Line will not stop while we deal with a customer incident.”

The station resumed normal operations around 30 minutes after the emergency began. One alarmed social media user reported on X: “When a police officer shouts ‘get out as fast as you can, go!’ on the platforms at Canary Wharf, it’s a frightening experience.”

Another tweeted: “If you hear a cop at Canary Wharf tube station shouting ‘get out as fast as you can’ at lunchtime, panic will ensue.” As the situation developed, someone else posted: “Londoners be careful, we don’t know what’s happening but Canary Wharf tube station is being evacuated.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed: “We were called at 12.50pm today (6 August) to a report of a person falling from a height at Canary Wharf tube station, Bank Street, E14.”

When the scene was reached, emergency responders provided intensive care. The emergency services announced: “We dispatched resources to the scene, including an ambulance crew, a paramedic in an emergency vehicle, an incident commander and members of our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART). We treated one man at the scene and transported him to a major trauma center.”

A spokesman for the British Transport Police told the Mirror: “At 1.07pm, officers were called to Canary Wharf tube station on reports of a medical incident. Paramedics also attended the scene and a man was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The incident is not being treated as suspicious.”
