Saul “Canelo” Alvarez could decide whether fans will ever see Terence Crawford in the ring again.

The Mexican, currently the unified super middleweight champion, has been the target of the American’s demands for over a year. Crawford has taken the first tentative step towards the fight by recently moving up to super welterweight. He has said that the challenge against Canelo is the only one he has left in the sport and it is believed that he could even retire if he doesn’t get it. The 36-year-old himself has said that this is certainly an option.

Canelo has ruled out discussions about the fight at least until the conclusion of his defense against Edgar Berlanga this weekend, but the questions will not go away during fight week.

Speaking to Manouk Akopyan, Alvarez was asked why he considered the fight against “Bud” easy and he pointed to the weight difference.

“You know what we saw in the last fight with him (against Israil Madrimov), I think that’s why there are weight classes. That’s what I think, it’s an easy fight for me.”

Crawford won a unanimous decision on the scorecards against Madrimov for the WBA super welterweight title, but ended a streak of ten stoppages, leading to speculation that his power may not have carried as far as he had hoped.

However, Canelo said he would consider an offer if one came along.

“Could be, why not? We’re in boxing.”

When asked what price he would ask for the fight, the Mexican decided to turn his attention back to Berlanga.

“You already know. You already asked me and I already told you. Right now I’m 100% focused on my fight on Saturday… You know the answer, buddy.”

It will be extremely interesting to see where he goes after this defense, if it is successful. As for Crawford, he seems willing to wait and see.
