HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – State health officials approved the reopening of the L&L Drive Inn in Captain Cook on Friday.
A health inspection revealed several violations that resulted in a red tag for the business and an immediate ban on food sales. The Department of Health found live cockroaches throughout the kitchen, as well as broken hand sinks and a suspected sewage backup.
Other violations on the DOH list included:
- Liquid with a color and odor consistent with sewage was rising from the floor tiles in the dry storage area;
- Walls, ceiling and fittings in the rear cooking area soaked with grease;
- The premises are not kept free of insects;
- The external openings of the premises are not protected against the entry of insects;
- Walls and roofs of the food establishment do not provide effective protection against the penetration of insects;
- The physical facilities are not maintained and cleaned.
A follow-up inspection revealed that the violations had been corrected and a green sticker had been issued.
Before reopening, the restaurant was ordered to dispose of contaminated food, hire a professional pest control company and conduct a thorough cleaning.
