The facade of a long-standing Edgebrook thrift store at 5413 W. Devon Ave. was destroyed when a car drove into it around 5:55 a.m. on Sunday, August 18. However, the owner of My Sister’s Closet hopes to open the store on Monday.

A white convertible was traveling east on Devon when it struck the curb, the sidewalk and then the building, according to Chicago police. The 24-year-old driver was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge in critical condition and received two tickets, police said.

The car partially struck one of the two storefronts of the 557-square-foot thrift store, breaking windows and ripping out metal strips, bricks and a door. A tree and a parking meter were also knocked down.

Store owner Joanne Nusbaum said she hoped the driver was OK and was glad the store was closed at the time of the accident and no one else was injured.

“It would have been terrible if I had been open,” she said. The damaged storefront was boarded up on Sunday afternoon.

Nusbaum said she expects the store to be open Monday, though perhaps a few hours late, and that most customers usually come in the back door because of the parking lot in the back. The store is closed on Sundays.

Despite the damage to the storefront, most of the merchandise and displays in the store are fine, Nusbaum said. “We have beautiful antique cabinets, and they’re fine,” she said.

Nusbaum said police, emergency services and the city’s public works department have done a great job. “It went really well, especially during the (Democratic) convention,” she said.

The store opened 42 years ago and had several branches in Devon. For more information visit www.mysistersclosetchicago.com
