The cause of death of a 57-year-old North Carolina woman who died Thursday at O’Hare International Airport after becoming “entangled” in the baggage conveyor belt has been announced, officials said.

According to the Cook County Coroner’s Office, the woman’s cause of death was asphyxiation by hanging; authorities concluded she committed suicide.

The woman was identified by CCMEO Friday morning as Virginia Christine Vinton of Waxhaw, North Carolina.

The incident occurred early Thursday morning near Terminal 5 at O’Hare, the Chicago Fire Department said. Terminal 5 is served by Delta Airlines as well as a number of international airlines.

According to police, surveillance video at 2:27 a.m. showed a woman entering an unoccupied and locked area of ​​the terminal.

At around 7:30 a.m. the unconscious woman was discovered and the Chicago Fire Department was called to the scene.

CFD officials initially said the call reported a person trapped in a plane in Terminal 5. Chicago Fire Department officials later said the woman had become “caught” in the baggage conveyor system.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, officials said.

According to Chicago police, an investigation into the death is ongoing.

The Occupational Health & Safety Administration confirmed to NBC Chicago that it was not involved in the death investigation. The woman who died was not an employee or contract worker of an airline or airport, but a member of the public.
