The cause of death of a North Carolina woman who was found “caught” in a baggage claim carousel at Chicago O’Hare Airport has been announced.

The death of 57-year-old Virginia Christine Vinton of Waxhaw was ruled a suicide by the Cook County Coroner’s Office on Friday.

A spokesman told the Chicago Tribune that she died of asphyxiation during hanging.

The 57-year-old was found shortly before 8 a.m. on Thursday in a restricted area in Terminal 5, where she was unconscious and “caught” in the conveyor belt.

Surveillance footage shows the woman entering the unoccupied area around 2:30 a.m. – five hours before her body was discovered.

Vinton was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident; he was not an airport employee.

Authorities said access to the part of the airport where the woman entered was restricted to employees only. Although the area is considered safe, it is not a high-security area, ABC 7 reported.

The terminal is served by Delta Airlines as well as international airlines.

Courtney Mares, a Catholic News Agency journalist who shot the video on the plane, said: “Our plane is currently on the runway at Chicago O’Hare while everyone’s phones are going off multiple tornado warnings.”

On July 15, the National Weather Service sighted no fewer than ten tornadoes simultaneously in the greater Windy City area, one of which was heading toward the international airport.
