CDCR Attorney Takes First Place at California State Fair

Attorney III Stephanie Wheatley of the CDCR’s Office of Legal Affairs was awarded first prize at the 2024 California State Fair. She competed in the Creative Arts Contest in the Paper Crafts, Other Paper Arts and Crafts division.

Stephanie Wheatley received a first prize ribbon for the fluted bowl at the California State Fair.

Wheatley created a decorative fluted bowl made of individual, multi-colored spirals. She was awarded a winner’s ribbon at the awards ceremony on the first weekend of the fair. The bowl was on display in Building 8.

She said she first discovered the art of quilling while on a cruise to Hawaii in 2019.

One day, a quilling craft class was scheduled. Although she didn’t know how to do quilling, she was lucky enough to sit at a table with experienced artists who taught her how to make a quilling flower.

Wheatley was immediately hooked. When she returned from the cruise, she ordered quilling supplies and has continued to create quilling art ever since.

She said she enjoys all kinds of crafts, especially paper arts. About ten years ago, she was introduced to paper arts and crafts by her very good friend and colleague Elizabeth Weathers, the human resources officer in the Office of Legal Affairs. The two friends attend classes, workshops and exhibitions to learn new skills and purchase the latest crafting materials.

She creates unique cards, tags, bags, boxes and gifts.

“Crafting is more than a hobby, it is my creative outlet,” she said.
