Chaos erupts in College Park as city council reprimands mayor

COLLEGE PARK, Georgia (Atlanta News First) – The city of College Park has been plagued by constant controversy over the past month.

In early July, hundreds of confidential College Park documents were discovered in a dumpster at the city’s recycling center.

A few weeks later, the political action group United College Park submitted 233 signatures to cancel the election of City Councilwoman Jamelle McKenzie.

Things got even more heated on Friday night when city council members voted unanimously to reprimand Mayor Bianca Motley Broom.

This special meeting came after the City Council alleged that the mayor exceeded her authority during a regularly scheduled council meeting on Monday.

Marcia Knox is a College Park resident who witnessed it all.

“All we want is a certain level of integrity, transparency and inclusivity from our governing body,” she said.

Shortly before the vote, chaos broke out in the town hall.

The crowd began clapping and shouting at the council members while a married couple was handcuffed and escorted out by police.

Acting City Manager Emmanuel Adediran then ordered officials to evict everyone from the chambers.

“As they were leaving the building, several people were arrested,” Knox said. “Some were escorted out in handcuffs.”

After a brief delay, Broom was unanimously reprimanded by her own city council before an empty audience at City Hall.

“The deals that are being made behind closed doors, the deals that are being made without the city’s involvement,” Knox said. “That’s not how it should be.”

On Sunday afternoon, a spokesperson for the city of College Park issued a statement that read, among other things:

“During the meeting, a disturbance occurred when the College Park City Council called for a reprimand of Mayor Motley Broom for her repeated misconduct and lack of leadership at public meetings. Contrary to public accusations, the City of College Park maintains its position that the resolution to reprimand the Mayor is lawful and justified.”

Knox is disappointed with local politicians and believes they need to put aside their differences and work together.

“I’m convinced that if this goes on long enough, College Park will get a bad name,” she said.

Last Friday, Councilwoman McKenzie filed a lawsuit in Fulton County Superior Court seeking to halt efforts to remove her from office.
