Chappell Roan receives cheers after red carpet altercation at MTV VMAs 2024

Chappell Roan receives cheers after red carpet altercation at MTV VMAs 2024

Chappell Roan stood her ground on the VMAs red carpet.

On Wednesday, September 11, the “Good Luck, Babe” singer and 2024 MTV VMAs nominee called someone out for their step-and-repeat behavior before the show in Long Island, New York.

A clip from the VMAs red carpet screening at the UBS Arena, later widely shared by fans on X (formerly Twitter), shows the 26-year-old pop star’s reaction when someone on the carpet is heard saying “shut up.” Variety also showed another angle of the interaction, identifying the person she responded to as a photographer.

“Shut up,” said Roan, pointing in the direction of the heckler.

After stepping back to have her outfit adjusted, Roan added, “Don’t do that. Not me, bitch!”

Roan’s response sparked cheers and chatter from the carpet. One attendee responded, “Tell them, girls.”

Further down the carpet, the “Casual” musician spoke with Entertainment tonight about the moment. “It’s pretty overwhelming and pretty scary. I think for someone who is very afraid of people yelling at you, the carpet is terrifying,” she told the outlet. “And I yelled back. I yelled back! You’re not allowed to yell at me like that.”

A spokesperson for Roan did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Roan’s red carpet reaction came when she debuted her medieval-style VMAs outfit before the show. The look consisted of a sheer, flowing Y/Project dress, a mint green cape and thigh-high boots, and she accessorized with a sword, metal cuffs and plenty of jewelry.

Roan is nominated for Best New Artist at the VMAs, an award for which she was nominated alongside artists such as Benson Boone, Gracie Abrams, Shaboozey, Teddy Swims and Tyla. Roan will also perform at the show, as will Sabrina Carpenter, Camila Cabello and Katy Perry, who is the most recent winner of the Video Vanguard Award.

It was a turbulent year for Roan, who placed several songs in the charts Billboard Hot 100 and drew huge festival crowds across the country. But as Bowen Yang did during her last Interview Magazine Despite her radio and streaming success, she has never cared about the charts or radio appearances in conversations.

“The biggest thing was getting recognition and just not feeling like myself. And touring is completely consuming,” Roan (real name Kayleigh Amstutz) added in the interview. “I’ve never cared about the charts or radio appearances, but it’s so crazy that people in the industry are taking me more seriously now than they used to. I’m like, ‘I’ve been doing this all the time, bitch.'”

Roan added that her career “means nothing now that I have a charting album and a song.”

“If anything, I’m like, ‘Fuck you guys for not seeing what’s really important.’ A ranking is so fleeting,” she said. “Everyone gets off the rankings. I’m like, ‘This is like being valedictorian.'”

The 2024 MTV VMAs will air live from the UBS Arena in New York on September 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
