INGLEWOOD, Calif. – The first half wasn’t pretty, but Jim Harbaugh’s Los Angeles Chargers are up 1-0.
The Chargers overcame a slow start and scored 16 points in the second half to defeat the Las Vegas Raiders 22-10 in Week 1.
Justin Herbert and the Chargers offense struggled to move the ball through the air, but Los Angeles was galvanized by three defensive gains and timely runs by running back JK Dobbins in the second half and cruised to the victory.
The Chargers gained a total of 316 yards, including 176 yards on the ground.
Harbaugh has a 5-0 record in season openers in his NFL coaching career, which dates back to his time with the San Francisco 49ers.

The Chargers defense is in good shape
The Chargers had three takeaways in their win.
Los Angeles held the Raiders to 123 total yards and seven points in the first half and kept Las Vegas out of the end zone in the second half.
The Raiders had a record of 5-14 on the third attempt and 0-1 on the fourth attempt.
Khalil Mack had three tackles, 1.5 sacks and a fumble recovery.
JK Dobbins looks healthy
An injury-free Dobbins played rejuvenated in his debut for the Chargers. The Ohio State product scored the Chargers’ first touchdown of the season on a 12-yard run and broke through several tackles on his way to the end zone. Dobbins had a 46-yard run and ran for 61 yards, all in the second half. He managed 10 carries and 135 rushing yards in the win.
Injuries have plagued Dobbins’ career. He suffered a season-ending knee injury in the 2021 preseason. Another knee injury limited the running back to eight games in 2022, and he tore his Achilles tendon in Week 1 last season.
Chargers offense lackluster in the first half
The Chargers’ offense struggled in the first half. The Chargers had only two first downs and went into halftime with 0 of 7 third downs. In total, they only managed a meager 83 yards.
Los Angeles’ offense had a hard time understanding the Raiders’ stunts and turns, and Herbert was under pressure for most of the first half.
Two players sent off towards the end of the fourth quarter
There is no friendly relationship between the two AFC West rivals.
Chargers WR Joshua Palmer and Raiders CB Jack Jones were ejected from the game because of the on-field brawl.
