A man has snapped up a piece of jewellery from a second-hand shop for less than £4 – but it’s worth more than £1,000.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the lucky buyer’s brother showed off the bargain – complete with a $4.99 (£3.81) price sticker. He wrote: “My brother just texted me this. What a find.”

The label revealed that the item came from Goodwill – a network of charity shops in the US and Canada known for selling second-hand goods.

The pictures show an office chair that at first glance appears to be fairly ordinary, which is probably why Goodwill offered it at such a low price. However, in one photo, the “Herman Miller” brand can be seen on the back.

Herman Miller is a renowned American company specializing in custom-made office furniture. The company is famous for inventing the office cubicle in 1968 and today sells its products worldwide.

And these items come at a hefty price. A chair like the one featured in the X post costs £1,149 on Herman Miller’s UK website. “Its innovative design and support for a range of postures, activities and body types,” says the company.

Users on X were baffled by the discovery, with one commenting, “Dude, $5 for a $1000 chair is the craziest shit I’ve ever seen.” Another user half-jokingly remarked, “Congratulations and fuck you.”

Others shared their experiences finding Herman Miller office chairs at bargain prices—obviously not everyone is aware of how much their chairs might be worth when they’re decluttering.

One person, sharing a picture of a chair in the back seat of their car, noted, “A lady near my work left this exact model of chair outside her house for free last week. I’ve never gotten away from work so quickly.” Another said, “Damn!!! I got one for $25 on Facebook Marketplace last month.”
