NFL Week 2 Takeaways: Chiefs Expect Good Things to Happen | SI

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are now what Tom Brady’s New England Patriots were – a team that just keeps winning and winning and winning, and sometimes in the most inexplicable ways. Sunday was, of course, an important day. The Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals were contenders in the AFC title game after the 2021 and 2022 seasons, and potentially could have been again last year had Joe Burrow not been injured. That said, it’s no exaggeration to think Kansas City’s 26-25 victory could determine the site of a playoff game.

B – Chiefs

The Chiefs definitely didn’t play their best game, but when you have Patrick Mahomes, you don’t always need his best game to win. Mahomes made some uncharacteristic mistakes, including an interception in the second half, but he rebounded by setting up Harrison Butker’s game-winning field goal on the final play. The Chiefs defense struggled at times, but Chamarri Conner made up for it when he made the most important play of the game, returning a Joe Burrow fumble 38 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Chiefs picked up the Bengals’ best drive and emerged victorious despite not playing their best, which is what championship football teams tend to do.

NFL Week 2: Chiefs win ugly games with ease; what we learned from every Sunday game | FOX Sports

Chiefs: Patrick Mahomes converted a fourth-and-16 attempt to win. Yes, he and receiver Rashee Rice drew a penalty for the Bengals on that play. But it was still a conversion. That’s how it goes with Mahomes, who is probably the best quarterback in the history of the game when it comes to a fourth-and-16 attempt. It’s silly to say this, but there is no quarterback – not even Tom Brady – that I would choose over Mahomes for a fourth-and-16 attempt. It was not a pretty game for the Chiefs offense. Their defense bailed them out in the crucial phase. But they have a quarterback who always Only enough to get wins. This team should look different than last year’s team, as the defense lost some of its stars (most notably L’Jarius Snead) and the offense gained reinforcements (Hollywood Brown and rookies Xavier Worthy and Kingsley Suamataia). But this team’s identity is basically the same as last year: win – sometimes as ugly as possible. — Henry McKenna

Ja’Marr Chase loses his composure in key moment for the Bengals – Chiefs: Referee explains penalty decision | Cincy Jungle

After Chase felt like he was pulled down by his face mask or possibly by a hip-drop tackle, the wide receiver became angry because Kemp didn’t throw a flag.

Instead of saying what he had to say and returning to the huddle, Chase persisted, and quarterback Joe Burrow ended up having to step between his No. 1 receiver and the referee.

2024 NFL Week 2: The key takeaways from each game | Bleacher Report

Despite their winless record, the Bengals haven’t completely lost their way. Of course, Cincinnati’s loss to the New England Patriots is troubling, but the Bengals held up well against the Chiefs in a 26-25 loss. Incidentally, the Patriots almost made it 2-0, but lost in overtime to the Seattle Seahawks.

The Bengals started the last two seasons 0-2 and finished both seasons with a win, last year without quarterback Joe Burrow for the final seven weeks. In 2022, they went 12-4 and made the AFC Championship Game.

As long as Burrow stays healthy, the Bengals will be in the playoff race by the end of the year. Additionally, Cincinnati’s offense will be stronger when wideout Tee Higgins (hamstring) returns to action.

NFL Week 2 Winner: Packers HC Matt LaFleur works his magic | Yardbarker

Matt LaFleur, head coach, Green Bay Packers | No Jordan Love, no problem. The Packers put third-year quarterback Malik Willis on the bench against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday in a game many couldn’t keep up with, and they won 16-10. It was perhaps one of LaFleur’s better performances as a coach in his career.

Green Bay forced the ball right down Indy’s throat and limited Willis’ passing situations to play to his strengths. The former Liberty player was more than efficient, completing 12 of 14 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown while adding 41 yards in the running game, and he wasn’t sacked once. LaFleur coached a nearly perfect game.

Texans vs. Bears scores and insights: CJ Stroud outlasts Caleb Williams and struggling Chicago offense | CBS Sports

Why the Bears lost

Last week’s incredible comeback victory over the Tennessee Titans allowed us all to put off a story we knew we would have to address soon. The Bears’ offense is not good — at least not right now. Yes, they’re working with a rookie quarterback and a new offensive coordinator and utilizing some new weapons, some of whom are already injured. But the bottom line is that Chicago has 353 total yards of offense through eight quarters.

Calling out a rookie quarterback’s plays is always difficult, but Shane Waldron will be a topic of conversation this week. What exactly is the identity of this offense? Will the offensive line be a major problem? There really hasn’t been an answer to the blitz, and I’m not going to blame all of that on Keenan Allen’s inactivity.

Injured Wilson honored with ‘Petty Game Ball’ in Steelers win | ESPN

Quarterback Russell Wilson did not play a single game in the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 13-6 win over the Denver Broncos, but coach Mike Tomlin still gave him a game ball.

Not just any ball – a “small ball”.

“I think we all know Russ got treated pretty badly last year,” quarterback Justin Fields said after the game. “I know he wished he could have played in this game today, but it’s great that he won. He got a trivial game ball.”

Jayden Daniels gets his first win but continues to raise concerns with his big hits | USA Today

The rookie quarterback was tackled by two New York Giants defenders, one of whom hurled the 210-pound playmaker into the dot-strewn turf with a sumo-style punch midway through the second quarter. Fans held their breath as Daniels tried to find his own; he missed a play and jogged back onto the field to relieved applause.

Although Daniels and the Commanders’ offense failed to reach the end zone, the No. 2 overall pick in the draft still earned the first win of his career with a 21-18 victory over the Giants on Sunday.

“There are a few times when you lose your breath,” said Daniels after the victory, “you have to take a breath first.”

Shooting after Lions game leaves one dead and one in critical condition | NBC Sports

About the Detroit Free PressThe incident occurred at Eastern Market. Two men were involved in a fight at around 4:30 p.m. local time. When they raised their hands, one of them pulled out a gun and fired two shots.

“Driving, drinking and guns,” said Detroit Police Chief James White. “They don’t mix.”

The man killed was one of two men preparing for a fight. Officers directing traffic nearby responded to the shooting, arrested the suspect and seized two weapons.

“It shouldn’t have led to this,” White said. “Unfortunately, two people were shot, one is dead. And there’s a suspect in custody facing some very serious charges … probably murder.”

Chiefs squad: Trey Hendrickson was a good test for Kingsley Suamataia

But almost immediately, Suamataia seemed to have the best chance of getting the job. And it soon became clear that he had got it.

But in the combative 26:25 victory on Sunday afternoon against the Cincinnati Bengalshe didn’t really look like it. He took a couple of holding penalties, allowed a few pressure situations – and at least one sack – to Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson.

“I mean, he’s just an absolute monster, man,” Hendrickson quarterback Patrick Mahomes said after the game. “I mean, his drive (and) the way he can pressure the passer? (I played against) him in New Orleans and he was like that — and then he came to Cincinnati (and he) is like that.

“But he did a great job today, man. He’s great against the run (and) the pass. (He’s) a little underrated – but it was a good test for us.”

The situation became so bad that head coach Andy Reid eventually sent Morris into the game to take the rookie starter’s place at left tackle.

“Sometimes you have to take a step back to take a step forward,” Reid noted after the game. “So Wanya came in and did a good job. Well… he had a penalty there too – but very rarely do you get a player like (Hendrickson) to play against.”
