The Baltimore Ravens were the NFL’s best rushing team last year and have bolstered their backfield even further this offseason by adding Derrick Henry to the backfield. He has led the NFL in rushing in four of the last five seasons. So to take the pressure off the 30-year-old 4-time Pro Bowler, the Ravens’ pass-receiving options will need to become a strength of their offense if they want to get back to the AFC Championship game.
Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports spent some time at Ravens training camp this summer and says that, alongside Mark Andrews, Baltimore’s wide receivers will play key roles this season, even if the focus is on the running game.
“The coaches believe Zay Flowers will take a step forward, and there is still a belief that Rashod Bateman can finally put his injuries behind him and play a key role. But as it stands, the plan is for a larger part of the offense to run through RB Derrick Henry and the tight ends.”
The Ravens rushed for 262 more yards than any other team in the regular season last year, and with Lamar Jackson still in charge, the running game will continue to be a focus. But after managing just 10 points and 81 yards on the ground in the AFC title game loss to Kansas City, the passing game may need to step up to get over the hurdle.
