China delivers heaviest offshore oil and gas platform for use in Saudi Arabia

China Offshore Oil Engineering has officially taken delivery of one of the world’s largest oil and gas platforms from its shipyard in Qingdao.

The Marjan platform for gathering and transporting oil and gas is considered by Chinese construction companies to be a breakthrough in the construction technology of large offshore oil and gas platforms. With a weight of more than 17,200 tons, it is one of the largest platforms in the world.

The platform is designed to collect and transport 24 million tonnes of crude oil and 7.4 billion cubic metres of associated gas per year. The platform size, pipeline types and sizes and system complexity set new records compared to similar platforms.

The construction of the project took 34 months.

The implementation of the platform project will help Chinese industry players transform from subcontractors to prime contractors in the global offshore engineering market, China Offshore Oil Engineering said.

The platform will be transported to its installation site 6,400 nautical miles away in the waters off Saudi Arabia at the end of August to improve the production capacity of the Marjan oil field.
